Palmetto Bluff, Bluffton, S.C.
For more than 100 years, Palmetto Bluff was a
private hunting preserve for the privileged few, just a stone’s throw from
Savannah, Ga. A rich tidal landscape with three different rivers and 32 miles of
shoreline, it is now being developed with environmental sensitivity. “We’ve
already deeded 9,000 of 20,000 acres to conservation easements,” says Tommy
Baysden, vice president of marketing. “We’re putting the density in a
village. Everything else is [designated for] large properties with privacy and
seclusion.”

They are priced from $1.3 million. Village living offers easy access to the luxury Inn and Spa at Palmetto Bluff, which opened just last year. Designed to look like an antebellum Southern mansion, the 9,500-square-foot spa was built on its own peninsula and can only be reached by footbridge. Each of the eight treatment rooms has a private open-air veranda with a claw-footed soaking tub. A 30-minute cypress and juniper bath is the perfect precursor to a deep tissue massage with a private therapist.
Jack Nicklaus designed the par-72 May River Golf Course, which winds along the river, past 300-year-old oaks and stands of palmettos. The course was created for strategy play, making it challenging for the seasoned player, yet approachable for the novice. It runs 7,171 yards from the tips, with a 75.4 rating and 140 slope. One-to-eight-acre homesites with fairway, marsh and river views are priced from $400,000 to $4.7 million. Farther up the May River are 10 family compounds at 15 to 30 acres each, priced from $2.85 million. Owners who are looking to create a legacy can build up to three residences on their properties, plus guest cottages and equestrian outbuildings.
