The Big Chill
While top-notch food preservation has always been Sub-Zero’s raison d’etre, style has been its claim to fame. Notable for developing and perfecting the art and science of flawlessly integrated built-in refrigeration, the company comes full circle with the PRO 48 commercial-style refrigerator/freezer. This substantial “icebox” weighs in at 800 pounds and is made of solid stainless steel, inside and out. Michele Bedard, director of marketing at Sub-Zero, says, “The development of a Sub-Zero professional-style refrigerator comes from the fact that a growing number of consumers aspire to and desire the professional kitchen lifestyle.” Indeed, freestanding or built-in, the PRO 48 ($12,000) looks as good as it performs with its optional triple-pane, UV-resistant glass refrigerator door, automatic icemaker drawer and cutting-edge LED lighting.

Wine Everlasting
The storage of fine wines is a volatile science plagued with varying rates of success. However, the Electrolux Absorption Wine Cellar overcomes such wine-damaging hazards as extreme swings in temperature and humidity, ultraviolet light, polluted air and excessive motion. In fact, this trim 23.5-inch-wide-by-56.5-inch-tall unit ($3,399) sports an absorbent cooling system that requires no compressor for its silent, vibration-free operation. “Because there is absolutely no movement, it doesn’t disturb the sediment,” explains Frank Downing, director of product and design for Electrolux. Other benefits include a 160-bottle capacity, digital controls that allow you to set the temperatures between 50 and 59 degrees Fahrenheit, a thermal UV-resistant glass door, and an optional trim kit for built-in installation.
