Great Gear: Szado Design Grand Prix
August 1, 2003
Defined by an inviting curvilinear structure, Grand Prix modular seating designed by Ed and Noël Szado epitomizes the avant-garde furniture produced at their Massachusetts workshop. With a focus on specialized design and craftsmanship, the husband-and-wife team evades the term “manufacturer” altogether. “Ed and I approach it as artists,” says Noël. “We are designers and pursue furniture design for the purity of form, transcending minimalism.” Like other models in the Szado collection, organic Grand Prix pieces are handcrafted and made to order in an infinite variety of finish materials, such as ultrasuede with arching stainless steel legs. As evidenced by the Szado-laden set of The Technical Writer—one of this year’s Sundance entries—the couple’s furniture lends a hip aesthetic, whether used as an accent or as the focal point of a room. And despite their high style, Szado’s pieces are remarkably comfortable. Individual seats start at $3,000. (Click image to enlarge)
