Collection Gift Guide: Manhattan 2000
December 2, 2002
The view had a deep impact on master stonecutter Hans-Juergen Henn as he drove from the airport into Manhattan 20 years ago. “The skyline, enhanced by the beauty of the twilight, resembled a tremendous sculpture of buildings and glass skyscrapers that appeared to grow out of the earth like a succession of crystals.” (Click image to enlarge)
Inspired from the moment he first saw that unforgettable skyline, the German-born Henn waited until 1997 to begin meticulously handcrafting a sculpture that would take him three years to complete. The one-of-a-kind creation, completed in 2000, features such well-known landmarks as the Trump towers, Empire State Building, and now-devastated World Trade Center, as well as 750 other Manhattan buildings. The forms are all cut from quartz, rock crystals and gemstones, and mounted on 4 feet of black granite.
Following the events of September 11, Henn, like so many others, was shocked and saddened. Nearly a year after the Twin Towers collapsed, Henn’s Manhattan 2000 brought tears to the eyes of many during its first United States viewing in Scottsdale, Ariz. Now back in Germany, the sculpture is available for private acquisition. Price upon request. (Click image to enlarge)
