Great Machines: Appliances: For the Caffeinated Connoisseur
06/01/2008
Fueled by a fervent passion for coffee, Zander Nosler and Randy Hulett—cofounders of the Seattle-based Coffee Equipment Company—noticed that technology for the brewed coffee market had grown stale, taking a backseat to the interest in espresso machines. They tested various brewing methods including drip, French press, and vacuum pots, and discovered that combining French press and vacuum technology was the best way to release coffee’s complex flavors. Blending their findings with their respective product design and development experiences, Nosler and Hulett created the Clover—the first single-cup, commercial-grade, VacuumPress coffee brewer. With a set-up that offers a fresh cup, from six to 16 ounces, every time, the commercial-grade perks don’t stop there—speed and customization are also on tap. On average, the Clover brews a cup of coffee in about 45 seconds. Moreover, you control temperature and time via the digital interface. Experiment with these parameters to explore the spectrum of your favorite coffee bean’s flavors.
From Australia to the United States, this stainless-steel smooth operator is used in more than 250 cafes around the world. Although the machine was not intended for private use, the Coffee Equipment Company has received several private inquiries from savvy caffeine addicts willing to pay approximately $11,000 for a machine that accomplishes the elusive goal of brewing "a damn good cup of coffee."
