On The Market: The Katherine
November 1, 2004
Designed around a multilevel winding staircase, the 177-foot Katharine was
custom built by New Orleans—based Trinity Yachts and is the 11th boat created for former real estate developer and yachting aficionado Jim Mattei. The
up-and-coming yacht builder put the finishing touches on the megayacht five months ahead of schedule despite more than 180 change orders made during the
28-month construction period. With cruising capabilities of up to 19.5 knots, the aluminum cruising vessel was designed to explore the shallow
waters of the Bahamas and make transatlantic voyages. (Click image to enlarge)
Designed by Claudette Bonville & Associates in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the boat’s interiors are awash in crotch mahogany and olive ash burl. Every detailed section of the living and sleeping quarters–six staterooms, multiple dining areas, including the aft deck, which can be fully enclosed and air-conditioned–have been given the same careful design considerations as a luxury home.
Rounding out her technical specs is a 16-foot telescope mast that can be raised while the boat is in motion, which increases the ship’s ability to sail almost anywhere.
The largest post—World War II yacht built in the United States for an American owner, Katharine is currently cruising the Mediterranean.
