Log Book: Mile Markers: 2008 Infiniti M45x

The Editors

June 1, 2008

Another welcome addition to our long-term fleet is the 2008 Infiniti M45x, which arrived with 650 miles. Options include a premium package with a 14-speaker Bose Studio Surround sound system, 9.3 GB hard drive, compact flash slot for MP3 files, and a mobile entertainment system for rear-seat passengers.

800—The entertainment system, with its foldable screen, is a good way to keep the kids quiet in the backseat during long road trips. However, aft controls can also change the radio stations and audio settings. Rear passengers should never have this much control.

1,645—"As an unabashed Infiniti fan and owner of two mid-’90s models, it was a pleasure to drive a new 8-cylinder car," writes photo research manager Sheila Cothern. "I enjoyed using the automated cruise control system that senses traffic and slows the car."

3,600—A lane departure warning system chimes when you stray from your lane, which can be annoying, though it encourages good driving habits. The system does not activate when you use the indicator during lane changes.

4,800—"While this car may not have the cachet of a BMW 5-Series or Mercedes-Benz E-Class, it does offer many of the same amenities," writes Meyers. "The seats remind me of those in a Lexus, which are as comfortable as any big leather armchair."

4,850—"Driving quickly over local twisty roads may be too much for this car," says one staffer. "There is significant body roll and not much feedback from the steering wheel." The M45 is engineered for cruising, after all, and not for careening through the canyons.
