Great Machines: An RV that will Float Your Boat
June 2, 2004
Hydra-Terra Wind
Half amphibian, half RV, and a whole lot of fun,
the Hydra-Terra Wind provides the best time you can have on a lake without
getting out of your car. Built as a luxury RV, it has bedroom slide-outs that
expand the living space 30 inches, as well as marble tiles that line the
bathroom floor and shower. Everything in the coach can be customized. Starting
at around $850,000, the RV has standard features such as plush leather seats
with eight-way adjustable controls, a 42-inch plasma-screen TV with surround
sound, and a DVD/CD player. The cabin resembles an airplane’s cockpit with its
numerous gauges and equipment, although the Internet-linked computer and GPS
navigational system do not require quite as much training to use. Teak cabinets,
along with gold-inlaid tables and granite countertops throughout, make it seem
like a second home. However, not many homes can travel in 4 feet of water. (Click image to enlarge)
This luxury RV is more lavishly decorated than many primary residences, but also
offers some James Bond–style thrills with its ability to leave the paved road behind and navigate a lake. (Click image to enlarge)Once afloat on a lake (it is not designed for ocean use), the machine is controlled with a joystick. Maneuvering is simple: After the marine transmission is placed into drive, a rudder angle indicator shows where the steering is set, and the front wheels can be used with the rudders to help with tight turns. But the machine does not just float. While it isn’t able to pull a water-skier, the back porch opens up with large sliding glass doors and doubles as a swim deck, giving it many of the same features as a luxury boat. With a Caterpillar 330 hp diesel engine, it can go about 1,100 miles on a single tank of fuel and reaches speeds of up to 80 mph on land and 8 mph in the water. The leveling system has been calculated to make sure that it will never topple over and never sink, despite being nearly 13 feet tall. If only it had wings to fly.
