Log Book: Mile Markers: BMW M3 Coupe

The Editors

June 1, 2008

In February, a comprehensively equipped BMW M3 Coupe joined the other long-term cars at our Malibu offices. After a few laps at Laguna Seca in Monterey, we took possession of the "Melbourne Red Metallic" Bimmer with 1,935 miles on the odometer.

1,935—The "M" button on the steering wheel does not add 100 hp as it does in the M5 and M6. Instead, the throttle response becomes more aggressive and the suspension tightens.

2,300—"This car has mood lighting for night driving," notes Meyers. "LED strips illuminate the ‘Fox Red Novillo’ leather and door panel trim."

3,600—"The iPod interface—hidden in the armrest—is finally what it should be," writes Meyers. "Once connected, the artist and song titles appear on the menu screen, making it easy to navigate. An added bonus to BMW’s often-ridiculed iDrive."

5,000—The M3’s twin cup holders extend from the dash, obstructing the passenger-side air vents. A lesson in ergonomics.

6,495—"The digital oil indicator appeared on the dash display asking for an extra quart," writes web manager Michael Kirrene. "We added two quarts, but it may be time to take the car in for service."

7,000—According to Santa Monica BMW, our M3 will not need a service inspection until the odometer reaches 12,000 miles.
