Great Machines: Automotive Aftermarket: From A to Z06
June 1, 2006
The Corvette Z06 may run with the world’s best supercars in terms of
performance and handling, but it is also a reliable and comfortable daily
driver. And when an owner’s thoughts turn toward preservation, enhancement, and
perhaps some discreet display of comradeship with fellow enthusiasts,
aftermarket vendor Mid America Motorworks stands ready to assist.
One of the
simplest ways to keep a Corvette looking new is to wrap it
in a Stormproof car
cover ($250 to $300). Made from microfiber fabric
that keeps water out, the
durable cover offers maximum protection from
harmful UV rays and dust, yet it is
soft enough to protect the paint.
The cover is available in gray or a two-tone
black and red color
scheme.

Like any car, the Z06 is vulnerable to stone
chips and high-speed insect impacts. A full front mask ($700) alleviates those
concerns. While many masks appear inelegant, Mid America’s version, tailored
specifically to fit the Z06, has a body-color finish that renders it virtually
invisible. The design is so effective that it will not flap or abrade paint at
speeds of up to 150 mph. The mask is offered in two styles—with or without an
opening for the front license plate—and matching rear view mirror masks are
available as well.
The interior areas most susceptible to wear are the floor
and cargo bay, which can be protected by tailored mats ($220). Made of durable
DuPont nylon, the mats feature Traction Bac non slip backing and are emblazoned
with the Z06 logo. Also available to cover high-wear areas are a center console
cover ($100) formed from automotive-grade vinyl, and leather wraps to cover the
door pulls ($35). The latter have Velcro fasteners to hold them in place. The
cover and wraps are available in colors that match Corvette interiors. Mid
America also offers a complete range of body and interior upgrades for all
C6-series Corvettes, and is equipped to do custom work on request.

Since
there is no such thing as too much horsepower, the proud Z06 owner might wish to
consider the Vortex Rammer ($570), a cold-air forced induction system that is
simple to install and street legal, and adds as many as 30 extra horses to the
existing 505. By forcing fresh air through a specially shaped sealed chamber,
the Rammer reduces intake air temperature as it increases volume.
As a final
visual touch, consider the extractor-style hood ($1,350), which features a pair
of functional outlet coves to draw heat from the engine bay. Standard Corvette
hinges and mounting/latching hardware attach the fiberglass unit, so it can be
replaced with the original when the time comes to show the car in its original
form.
